Things to Do in Freeport, Bahamas

  • Beaches- 
    There are generally two types of beaches on Grand Bahama Island: activity beaches and secluded beaches. Freeport, Bahamas has a number to choose from as well! Bahama Princess Beach is a calm stretch of sand where visitors can go to escape some of the crowds that typically gather on the beaches in the Bahamas.  Xanadu Beach is best known for its water sports and lounging areas, making it a popular tourist destination. East Palm Beach a nice quiet spot without being too far away from the excitement of Freeport. Silver Point Beach; Explore this coral reef and get to know first-hand the beauties of the sea. Lucaya Beach is near the Port Lucayan Marketplace via one of the public accesses between the resorts. Smith’s Point Beach is adjacent to Taino Beach in the Lucaya area and is famous for its Wednesday night “fish fry” where visitors and locals dance and socialize while enjoying tasty native dishes such as fried snapper, potato salad and peas ‘n’ rice.  
  • Water Activities-
    If you love the water, there are enough activities to keep you entertained for days. Some water sports you’ll have no problem finding include: Diving, Sailing and boating, Parasailing and Windsurfing.
  • Nature-
    Grand Bahama Island is filled with natural wonders that make it a fascinating place to explore, whether on land or sea.     • The Lucayan National Park has great historical and cultural significance. The Lucayan Caverns has over six miles of caves, caverns and charted tunnels, and one of the longest underwater cave systems in the world! Part of the protected park is Gold Rock Beach, which supports Grand Bahama's mangrove ecosystem and features a spectacular variety of tropical vegetation.
    • At Garden of the Groves, indigenous and migratory birds and butterflies sip nectar or take insects from the many flowers and shrubs that were newly planted to provide nectar, insects and berries for wildlife. Since the Garden was re-opened it has been certified as a Wildlife Habitat by the U.S. Wildlife Federation because the new operators are providing the four basic habitat elements needed for wildlife to thrive: food, water, cover, and places to raise young.
  • Golf-
    If you are a golf enthusiast, golfing on a tropical is something you'll want to try. Grand Bahama Island has warm weather year-round and averages seven hours of completely sunny skies per day. The rain rarely lasts very long, so there’s no reason to limit playing on the island.
  • Couple Activities- 
    The Bahamas have always been a place for couples to rekindle a flame or celebrate a new beginning. With tropical spa treatments, to a simple walk along the moonlit beach to a bonfire, the Bahamas is a great place to experience with the people you love.

What to Pack

Everyone wears T-shirts, shorts and flip-flops because of the gorgeous weather! Make sure to bring sunscreen and sunglasses or even a hat to keep yourself protected from the rays.  Hiking shoes if you're planning to explore. Everything for swimming, multiple bathing suits, including one for water sport activities. There are some dressy places to dine, but most of Freeport is very casual.

Transport

There are about 10 rental car companies on the Island. There is a public transportation bus system which is a fantastic way to see the sights and mingle with local Bahamians. The public transportation system is quite extensive and most fares range between $1 and $2 per ride. For anyone wanting to feel the wind in their hair, motorcycles, mopeds and scooters are also available for rental. Using one of these vehicles to traverse the Island is a unique way to see the sights. Fun Facts
  1. There are two seasons here: Summer: May through September, with temperatures around 80-85°F & Winter: October through April with temperatures averaging 70-75°F. The rainy season spans from May through October.
  2. Dean’s Blue Hole, West of Clarence Town, on Long Island; Plunging 202 metes into the sea, it’s the deepest blue hole in the world.
  3. The indigenous people: The first people that inhabited the island were called the Tainos.
  4. Lucayan National Park, Grand Bahama Island: The longest (known) underwater cave system in the world can be found in Lucayan National Park, on Grand Bahama Island.
  5. Pink Sands Beach, Harbour Island: The pink sand of Pink Sands Beach, on Harbour Island the Bahamas, comes from Foraminifera, a microscopic marine animal with a bright pink or red shell.
